2290 Tax Calculator

You don’t have to calculate everything manually. With an IRS-approved 2290 tax calculator, you can quickly estimate your tax liability and e-file your return in minutes. Let’s walk through the details.

What is the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT)?

The HVUT, which is a federal government excise tax, is an annual tax collected by the IRS on large vehicles that run on highways in the US. The taxable gross weight of a vehicle is determined by:

  • The unloaded weight of the vehicle, fully equipped for service.
  • The unloaded weight of trailers or semitrailers is customarily used with the vehicle.
  • The maximum load the vehicle and trailers can carry.

If your vehicle’s taxable gross weight is 55,000 pounds or more, you must pay HVUT and file Form 2290 with the IRS.

IRS 2290 Tax Rates for 2025

For the current tax year, July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026, the IRS has kept the HVUT rates unchanged:

  • 55,000 lbs → $100 (base tax)
  • Over 55,000 lbs → Add $22 for each additional 1,000 pounds (or part thereof)
  • Over 75,000 lbs → Maximum annual tax capped at $550

Example using the 2290 tax calculator:

  • 60,000 lbs truck = $100 + (5 × $22) = $210
  • 75,000 lbs truck = $540
  • 76,000 lbs or more = $550 flat rate

Filing Period & Deadlines in 2025

  • The current filing season is from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026.
  • If your truck’s first use month (FUM) is July, then the due date to submit your Form 2290 will be September 2, 2025 (extended because August 31 is a weekend and September 1 is Labor Day).
  • For vehicles that were first used later in the tax year, the due date will be the last day of the following month.

The 2290 tax calculator is designed to adjust your HVUT liability depending on the month of your vehicle.

Suspended, Exempt, and Discounted Vehicles

Some vehicles are not subject to HVUT or qualify for reduced taxes:

  • Low-mileage vehicles → A motor vehicle that has been driven 5,000 miles or less (7,500 for agricultural vehicles) is suspended from HVUT. No tax is due, although you still need to file Form 2290.
  • Logging vehicles → 25% less HVUT is paid.
  • Exempt vehicles → Vehicles of the federal, state, or local government, the American Red Cross, fire trucks, ambulances, rescue squads, tribal government vehicles, and certain mass transit vehicles.

The 2290 calculator can assist you in accurately identifying exemptions or suspensions when filing your return.
