4868 Deadlines
The IRS Form 4868 allows individuals to request a 6-month extension to
file their annual income tax. Form 4868 contains important deadlines that cannot be missed.
Deadline to file Form 4868
April 15th
If you’re a calendar year filer and your tax year ends on December 31st, the due date for filing your
federal individual income tax return is generally April 15th of each year.
Deadline if abroad
June 15th
However, for US citizens living overseas, this deadline is automatically extended to June 15th all
individuals who live oversee can request an extension for an additional 4 months to obtain a total of 6
months of extension.
How long is the extension?
Filing this form gives you until October 15th to file a return.
If the deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the due date is delayed until the next
business day. Your return is considered filed on time if the envelope is properly addressed, postmarked, and
deposited in the mail by the due date. To get the extension, you must estimate your tax liability on this
form and should also pay any amount due.
