What is Form 8849 and its Schedules?

The IRS Form 8849 is used to file a claim for a refund of excise taxes or to claim certain fuel claim refunds that are paid for vehicles that were sold, destroyed, stolen etc.

Better to understand section 8849 Schedules:

Form 8849 Schedule 1 Non-taxable Use of Fuels - An ultimate purchaser of certain fuels uses Schedule 1 to make a claim for a refund. The fuels for which a claim can be made are listed on the form.

Form 8849 Schedule 2 Sales by Registered Ultimate Vendors - A registered ultimate vendor of undyed diesel fuel, undyed kerosene, kerosene sold for use in aviation, gasoline, or aviation gasoline uses Schedule 2 to make a claim for a refund.

Form 8849 Schedule 3 Certain Fuel Mixtures and the Alternative Fuel Credit - To make claims for sales or uses of biodiesel mixtures, renewable diesel mixtures, and alternative fuels.

Form 8849 Schedule 5 Section 4081(e) Claims - A person who has paid and reported a section 4081 tax to the government on taxable fuel uses Schedule 5 to claim a refund of that tax if a prior section 4081 tax on that fuel has also been paid and reported to the government.

Form 8849 Schedule 8 Registered Credit Card Issuers - Registered Credit Card Issuers are used by registered credit card issuers to make a claim for a refund or payment of tax paid on certain sales of taxable fuel (diesel fuel, kerosene, and gasoline) to state and local governments and certain sales of gasoline to non-profit educational organizations.

How to e-file Form 8849 with Tax2efile

  • Sign in to your Tax2efile account with your email address and password.
  • Select e-filing 8849
  • Click on the form that says “8849” under Excise Tax.
  • Select the company information for which you want to save Schedule 6 (Form 889). If you want to apply for a new company, click the “Add New Organization Profile” button and fill in your company information.
  • Enter Over Payment Credit details or Sold/Destroyed/Stolen Credit details or Mileage Not Exceed Vehicles details based on the available condition.
  • Enter the missing event reason to choose schedule 6 (Model 8849). When you select a missing event, you will be prompted to enter additional details of your choice. After entering the required information, click Save and Continue.
  • Review and pay service.
  • Check all the information you have entered and make the payment by entering your credit card information. Check the terms and conditions checkbox before clicking the submit button.
  • Once you submit the return information, we will send you a return update via registered email.

When is the Due Date to File Form 8849 Schedule 6?

Tax filers can file form 8849 Schedule 6 within 3 years of filing the return associated with the application or within 2 years of the date of payment of the reported tax, whichever is later.

Form 8849 Schedule 6 is used to claim a refund of excise taxes, reasons to claim a refund may be if a:

  • Vehicle was sold, stolen, or destroyed before June 1st.
  • Vehicle was used less than 5,000 miles or 7,500 miles if the vehicle is considered an agricultural vehicle during the tax period
  • Overpayment mistake occurred in a tax liability

To file Form 8849 the filer will need to have the VIN, the amount of the refund, and the tax period that the refund will be submitted for.

Schedule 6 at the moment. Schedule 6 is used to make claims on taxes reported on IRS Form 2290.

Tax2efile does not support these Schedules at the moment Tax2efile only supports Schedule 6.
