HVUT Form 2290 Proof of Payment

For a newly purchased vehicle to register with the state, you do not need any proof of payment, you need to present a copy of invoice of sale, showing that the vehicle was purchased recently within 2 months. But the tax due must be paid and the return must be filed.

Only limited states in the country have agreed to participate in the substitute proof of payment program with the IRS. In such states, the Department of Motor Vehicles(DMV) forwards the return to the Internal Revenue Service if certain conditions are satisfied. When the tax payer provides the Heavy Vehicle Used Tax Form 2290 along with the voucher and the payment to the Department of Motor Vehicles, to forward to the IRS, then proof of payment is not required to register the vehicle. To know more, check with the local DMV to verify whether the state participates in the program.

When the tax payer submits the IRS 2290 Form to the local DMV to forward, the return is not counted as filed with the IRS, until the IRS receives the Form 2290. In such cases, the tax payer is responsible for the IRS penalties and interests if the tax filing is done late or lost by the DMV. Therefore, the tax payer needs to check the status of the application or choose to E-file Truck Taxes to make the filing before the due date.
