What is IRS Tax Form 4868 ?
You can get an automatic extension of time to file your tax return by filing Form 4868 electronically. You will receive an electronic acknowledgement once you complete the transaction. Do not send in Form 4868 if you file electronically, unless you are making a payment with a check or money order. Complete Form 4868 to use as a worksheet. If you think you may owe tax when you file your return, you will need to estimate your total tax liability and subtract how much you have already paid. You can apply for an extension by e-filing Form 4868 from your home computer or through a tax professional who use e-file service.

File Form 4868 by April 15, 2010. Fiscal year taxpayers, file Form 4868 by the regular due date of the return. If you are out of the country and a US citizen or resident, you are allowed 2 extra months to file your return and pay any amount due without requesting an extension. For a calendar year return, this is June 15, 2010. File this form and be sure to check if you need an additional 4 months to file your return. You can file your actual return any time before the extension expires.

If you want an automatic six-month extension to file your tax return, you can file Form 4868 by April 15 or the next business day when the 15th falls on a weekend or Emacipation day. However, you must pay any tax you estimate will be due by 4/17/2012 or you may be subject to interest and penalties on overdue taxes. Your actual return would then be due on October 15

IRS will not notify individuals of an extension request being granted. Upon receipt of Form 4868, the request for an is automatically granted. However, all taxes owed must be submitted with Form 4868 to avoid fees and penalties. We will notify the individuals about their acknowledgements regarding the acceptance of extension as well as rejections if any. Customers will be able to resubmit their 4868 without any additional service charge if their 4868 got rejected.
