Michigan
This states that if you lived in Michigan the entire year and had earned income; you are required to file
Form MI 1040. You are also required to file the same status as on your federal tax return. If you have any

PART-YEAR RESIDENT:
This states that you only lived in Michigan for a short period of time and you will be taxed on all earned
income while you lived in Michigan. If you had income from another state, you are required to send a copy of
that state’s return with your Michigan return as well. This also means you are required to file Form MI-1040
and Schedule NR. If you have any questions, you may access the Michigan Department of Revenue guidelines.
NON-RESIDENT:
This states that you may or may not have lived in Michigan, but you had wages, salaries, and compensation
that are from a source within Michigan, then you are required to file Form MI 1040 and Schedule NR. You will
not file a state return with Michigan if you live in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Minnesota, or
Wisconsin. This is due to the reciprocal agreements between Michigan and the above-mentioned states. If you
