E-file your return 8868 with Tax2efile for a more accurate process! Form 8868 is a tax extension form for tax-exempt organizations; used to request an additional 6-month extension to file an organization's tax return. Beginning in 2016, the IRS combined automatic 3-month extensions and non-automatic into one 6-month automatic extension form.
Form 8868 cannot be used to extend the deadline for Form 990-N. Organizations are only entitled to a 6-month extension to file tax returns for the tax year. Form 8868 must be filed by the organization's income tax filing deadline.
The IRS charges a late fee if organizations do not file their tax returns. This fee will increase each month after the due date. Penalties can start from 0.5% and go up to 25% of the amount owed. However, if the taxpayer provides a valid reason for not filing on time, the IRS may impose a penalty.
Check the 8868 deadline page for exact filing deadlines
Note: The IRS recommends that non-profits and tax-exempt organizations use Form 8868 for E-filing for faster and more accurate processing.
Automatic extension return can be filed by charities, non-profit groups, and other tax-exempt organizations that need time to file their information return with the IRS. Also, the trustee of a trust who is required to file Form 1041-A or Form 5227 can use Form 8868 to request an extension of time to file their information returns.
The deadline to file Form 8868 is May 15th, if you are following a Fiscal Tax Year, then the deadline is the 15th Day of the 5th Month after your tax year ends.
