What is IRS Form 8868?
Tax-exempt organizations use Form 8868 to request an extension
of time to file their annual return to IRS (Internal Revenue Service). Form 8868 can be used to
request up to six months to file for any of the below listed returns.
Non-profits and tax-exempt organizations are required to file
Form 990-N, 990-EZ, or other series
of 990 Return annually to report to report activity and finances the IRS and maintain the
transparency of the organization's financial activities. Failure to keep up with filing the return
on time may result in the loss of tax-exempt status.
Form 8868 cannot be used to extend the deadline for Form 990-N. Organizations may only request a maximum of 6-month
extension to file their correct tax returns for the tax year. Form 8868 must be filed by the
organization's income tax filing deadline to request an extension.
Note: The IRS only
accepts electronic filing of Form 8868 after March 17, 2024.
