Form 8868 is an Exempt Organization Tax Extension form; that is used to request an additional 6-Month filing extension to file the organization’s tax returns. Starting inA 2016, the IRS combined the 3-Month Automatic and Not-Automatic Extensions into a Single 6-Month Automatic Extension Form. Form 8868 cannot be used to extend the due date of Form 990-N. An organization is allowed only an extension of 6 Months for a tax return of the tax year. Form 8868 has to be filed on the deadline of the form used to file the organization’s tax return.

If the organization fails to file its tax return the IRS will add a late penalty fee. This fee will be added to each month after the due date. The penalty can start from 0.5% and can be as high as 25% of the amount due. However, If the tax filer provides a reasonable cause on why the filing was not done on time the IRS may or may not charge the penalty fees.

To locate the exact deadline to file your return please refer to the IRS website.
