In the first case say 2 extra months&#8217; extension is allowed automatically (notwithstanding <strong>form 4868<\/strong>) for those on the due date of April 18<sup>th<\/sup>, 2017 who are out of the country and U.S. citizens or residents who live outside the USA and Puerto Rico or elsewhere even without an extension request. But should pay tax dues on time the April 18<sup>th<\/sup> and file returns in a calendar year on or before June 16<sup>t, <\/sup> 2017. They can use form 4868 in case they want to extend up to 6 months so that they can file the income tax returns on or before October 15<sup>th<\/sup>, 2014In the second case, by the request through form 4868, the automatic extension of time say 6 months is allowed but one needs to pay the tax due on or before April 18<sup>th<\/sup>, 2017 and file returns in a calendar year on or before October 16<sup>th<\/sup>,2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Application for automatic extension of time to file US individual income tax return is form 4868 which is simple in its form but complex to understand. That\u2019s why the initial briefing notes are given above. Form 4868 has two parts in its presentation asking for individual identification details in the first part viz., Name, Address, City, town or post office, State, and Zip code. Your Social Security Number and your Spouse\u2019s Social Security Number.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Individual income tax details in the second part as per Form 4868 deal with &#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: .25in;\">1)\u00a0\u00a0 Estimate of total tax liability for 2016<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: .5in; text-indent: -.25in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]-->2)<span style=\"font-size: 7pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><!--[endif]-->Total 2013 payments<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: .5in; text-indent: -.25in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]-->3)<span style=\"font-size: 7pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><!--[endif]-->Balance Due (subtract \u201ctotal 2016 payments\u201d from \u201cEstimate of Total tax liability for 2016\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: .5in; text-indent: -.25in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: 'HelveticaNeueLT Std', serif;\">4)<span style=\"font-size: 7pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Amount you are paying<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: .5in; text-indent: -.25in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: 'HelveticaNeueLT Std', serif;\">5)<span style=\"font-size: 7pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Check here if you are \u201cout of the country\u201d and a U.S. citizen or resident (see instructions)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: .5in; text-indent: -.25in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]-->6)<span style=\"font-size: 7pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><!--[endif]-->Check here if you file Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ and did not receive wages as an employee subject to U.S. income tax withholding&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: .25in;\">On the tax due date of April 18<sup>th<\/sup>, 2017, for those who are out of the country and a U.S.citizen or resident ticking the necessary box in the 8<sup>th<\/sup> line above will give you another automatic extension of up to 4 months in addition to the privileged 2 months they enjoy even without extension request through form 4868 as discussed earlier in this article.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ filers. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>If you cannot file your return by the due date, you should file Form 4868.
